Brian Hawkeswood BA(Syd)Dip.Ed(Syd)Dip.T.E.F.L.(Lon)
*Presently I teach Art to 270 children working closely with the classroom teachers from grade 1 to grade 5 on IBPYP
Units of Inquiry. Also I work in a collegial group with three other art teachers sharing ideas about materials and
resources, projects that used PYP, MYP, and IBDP, and shared exhibitions of students work. I have been involved in
many school based workshops and meetings about IBPYP. I have completed a two PYP training workshops. In June
2007 I attended the IBO DP Visual Arts workshop in Canberra, Australia. I am also working with a year eleven class.
*My time at Chiang Mai International School was spent teaching children from grade 1 to 6 and assisting senior
students with their art portfolios for university entrance. I work in a collegial group that looked at IBDP workbooks,
presentation and their work as young artists.
*I enjoyed working in England in many schools gaining experience teaching GCSE and A-level Art as well as time as a
primary school teacher.
*My teaching posts in Australia involved managing the art departments of two schools K-10 and K-12 respectively. My
duties included the full range of tasks necessary for such a positions. Regular meetings were held with two part time art
teachers regarding assessment, programming, behavior/discipline/pastoral care, funding, material requirements and
safety.
Display and exhibitions of student’s works are an integral part of art education. Whole school and classroom displays
increases awareness of the processes and outcomes and helped to increase self esteem of the students. I have been
involved in community mounted Arts and Crafts Exhibitions as well as being the president of the Nimbin Arts Council, a
subsidiary of the state funded Arts Council of Australia.
Local artists have been regular visitors to my classroom and students of all ages have gained a great deal from their
work and ideas. I have established two darkrooms and have worked with senior students to develop their skills as
young photographers. Presently I am extending this work into computer graphics using a number of the programs now
available.
I have established two specialist ceramics rooms and I always aim to create a happy, cooperative, healthy and effective
learning environment. Children are always eager to reach my art room to begin working. I encourage the highest
standards and I always make my intentions clear to my students.
I have organized excursions to local and interstate galleries to reinforce class work.
My own work focuses on painting in oils on canvass in a realistic style. This work always fascinates the students in my
care.
Philosophy of Education
*To pass on to the next generation knowledge and appropriate values.
*That all children can learn and feel within themselves they can be successful learners. Teachers must be aware of
different learning styles. It is rare that a child leaves my class thinking he/she has been unsuccessful.
*Be aware of how children and adolescents see themselves fitting into the world. This knowledge can be used in a
sensitive way be teachers when developing teaching programs and in varying classroom practice.
*Specific to art education is its value in fostering: thought, discovery, experiment, invention, imagination, questioning,
problem solving and communication ideas and feelings
*I feel the IBO Learner Profile and Attitudes are fundamental to any education programme.
